As part of the Nature for Veterans programme, Rewilding Ukraine, in cooperation with the Izmail State Administration, organised another rehabilitation trip to the Danube Delta from 27–29 May for a war veteran and families of Ukrainian defenders, including relatives of fallen service members.

Over the course of three days, participants explored the region’s natural values and learned about ongoing rewilding efforts. The programme included a guided tour around Vylkove, fishing activities, a visit to Ermakiv Island, and observation of large herbivores that play a vital role in restoring natural processes in the Danube Delta.
The Nature for Veterans programme aims not only to introduce participants to Ukraine’s natural heritage but also to support their psychological well-being and recovery. Time spent in nature, meaningful social interaction, and the opportunity to step away from everyday routines can contribute to emotional restoration and help reduce stress. Across the world, nature-based approaches are increasingly recognised as an important component of recovery programmes for veterans and their families.
A special part of the programme was a meeting with Rewilding Ukraine Director Oleg Dyakov and field officer Oleksandr Haidash. During the discussion, participants learned about the concept of rewilding, ongoing ecosystem restoration efforts in the Danube Delta and Tarutyno Steppe, and the role of nature in building resilient and healthy communities.

Nature for Veterans is an initiative of Rewilding Ukraine created to express gratitude to Ukraine’s defenders and their families by offering opportunities to experience the unique nature of the Ukrainian Danube Delta, learn about rewilding achievements in the region, and spend time outdoors in ways that support emotional well-being and psychological recovery.
The programme is implemented with the support of Rewilding Europe, partners, and local communities that help make these trips accessible to veterans and their family members.
