Help nature and animals of Ukraine during the war

russia’s brutal war in Ukraine has been going on for more than a year now, claiming thousands of peaceful lives and destroying everything in its path. As a result of military actions and constant bombing by Russian troops, valuable natural areas are being destroyed, and a large number of animals are dying in zoos, reserves or abandoned houses. Conditions for proper maitenance of animals both in the wild and in specialized places are being deteriorated significantly. Bombing and stress are killing animals in occupied zoos. Some of them have to be put to death if it is not possible to transport them to safe regions.

Protected areas

Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve

Denis Vishnevskyi
Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve

The largest protected area in Ukraine, located in the north of the country within the exclusion zone and the zone of compulsory resettlement. Within the thirty-six years since the Chernobyl accident, largely due to the cessation of economic activities, the nature of the region has gradually recovered, increasing the number and diversity of animals and plants. Scientists estimate that there are more than 1,200 species of higher vascular plants and more than 300 species of animals in the Reserve, including many rare species protected nationally and internationally: brown bear, lynx, black grouse, western capercaillie, eagle owl, and many others. Also, this area became a refuge for the free population of Przewalski’s horses – the only existing species of horses that have survived in its original form. In addition to the tasks of preserving and restoring the natural complexes of Polissya, the Chornobyl Reserve has several specific missions related to monitoring the radiation situation and maintaining control over the exclusion zone and zone of compulsory resettlement.

From the first day of the war across the border with the Republic of Belarus, Russian troops invaded the territory of the Reserve, which, together with the surrounding areas, was under occupation for more than a month. Not only natural complexes but also the infrastructure of the Reserve and the material and technical base of enterprises suffered significant losses.

Bridges across the Pripyat and Uzh rivers were destroyed, administrative buildings and auxiliary buildings were looted and partially destroyed, office equipment, laboratory equipment and computers, other devices were stolen or destroyed. Scientific efforts of many years are gone, the technical and material basis of the crisis monitoring system, state protection of natural complexes and other important services have been destroyed.
Now the institution needs to completely resume its working processes.

Getmanski National Nature Park

Getmanski National Nature Park
Getmanski National Nature Park

The Nature Park is located in the Sumy region, in northeastern Ukraine, on the border with Russia. The National Nature Park was created to preserve the unique forest-steppe landscapes of the region, which are of significant diversity: deciduous forests of watersheds, pine forests on the terraces of the Vorskla River, and the floodplains. There are more than a thousand species of plants and two and a half thousand species of animals in the park. Many of them are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, such as the common crane, which is a symbol of the park, the Eurasian otter, short-tailed weasel, Ukrainian brook lampre, European stag beetle, Old World swallowtail, various species of orchids and more.

From February 24 to April 1, 2022, about half of the area of the Getmanski Park was under occupation, heavy fights took place here, and the border areas are still under threat of shelling. As a result of the military actions, natural ecosystems were damaged, the park’s infrastructure and houses of the institution’s employees were destroyed, property and motor vehicles were stolen.

Offices of the park, stretched along the river for 120 km, are located in the most destroyed cities of Sumy oblast: Okhtyrka, Trostyanets and Velyka Pisarivka.

Now the Park needs help in the form of:

  • Uniforms for rangers;
  • Field vehicle for patrolling the park;
  • Materials, equipment and other necessary things for an ecological and educational visitor center in the village Velyka Pisarivka;
  • Financial assistance for renewing the infrastructure and the property of the park. The donation to the park can be made according to the bank details at the link.

If you would like to provide non-financial assistance to the Getmansky Park, or the support in establishing a visitor center, or have any questions, please contact the representative of the institution by sending an e-mail to getmanski_nnp@ukr.net

“Yelanets Steppe” Nature Reserve

Yelanets Steppe Nature Reserve
Yelanets Steppe Nature Reserve

The reserve was established in the south of Ukraine in order to preserve and restore the last steppe areas of the region. Prior to the establishment of the Reserve, part of this area was significantly affected by economic activity, but over the past 25 years, the efforts of the institution helped to gradually restore the steppe areas to their natural state. Here you can find more than 840 species of plants and fungi, as well as more than 600 species of animals, including European roe deer, long-legged buzzard, Blotched snake, lesser noctule and other rare species of bats, and more. The decoration of the Yelanets steppe is a herd of American bison, which is kept in semi-free conditions in a large aviary of 70 hectares. Significant scientific and ecological-educational work is carried out on the basis of the nature reserve.

The active hostilities took place right near the territory of the Yelanets steppe Reserve. The risk of shelling still remains high, as the region is actively exposed to enemy attacks and bombing.

Due to significant stress from loud explosions, the bisons damaged part of the fence and went outside. The staff was able to quickly return the animals and temporarily repair the damaged area of the enclosure. But the fence needs to be rebuilt, otherwise the animals may run away again and be killed due to fighting or other factors. The Reserve appeals to supporters to provide financial support or materials to rebuild the fence to save the bisons. It also needs medicines and special equipment to treat these giants from helminths. In addition, the staff of the institution will be grateful for the experts advice on the treatment of animals.

The donation to the park can be made according to the bank details at the link.

If you would like to provide non-financial assistance to the Reserve, or have any questions, please contact the representative of the institution by sending an e-mail to zapovidnik96@gmail.com.

Animal shelters

Shelter "Best Friends"

Best friends shelter
Best friends shelter

This private animal shelter was built 8 years ago in the village Fasova near Kyiv. Before the war, the shelter was home to about 1,000 animals, including dogs, cats, horses, goats, wolves, raccoon dogs and foxes. Their number gradually increased. The organization existed thanks to charitable donations and the help of volunteers and caring people. Thanks to widespread information through social networks and the activities of supporters, many animals found their homes, which allowed the shelter to help more animals. “Best Friends” staff continued to monitor the fate of animals that found new owners and published greetings from new homes on their information resources.

During the war, the shelter was badly damaged by bombing and airstrikes. The shelter buildings were almost completely destroyed. Many animals died, such as all puppies, young animals, goat and many cats, wolves escaped from damaged enclosures. Most of the dogs survived and fled to the fields and villages near the shelter, others remained in the shelter.

Currently, in order to take care of their little wards, the shelter needs help.

The shelter needs:

  • Dry food for dogs and cats, granulated food for horses;
  • Medicines (antiparasitic drugs are needed, such as Simparica, Bravecto);
  • Building materials (foam blocks, cement, metal profile for the roof);
  • Rebuild the solar power system;
  • Financial assistance for keeping animals. Financial aid can be provided directly to the charitable account of the organization. Please find the full bank details at the link.

Shelter "Give me a paw, friend"

"Daj lapu, drug" shelter
"Daj lapu, drug" shelter

“Give me a paw, friend” is a public shelter that helps animals in need: the injured, the sick, the elderly, and disabled animals. The shelter has existed for 12 years only on donations from citizens. Animals are kept in large enclosures, receive good nutrition, they are all sterilized and vaccinated. Cleanliness is the hallmark of the shelter. All stories of wards are available in the public domain on the website. The weekend is usually an open day, which helps animals find new homes and the most loving and responsible owners.

“Give a paw, friend” is located in Zaporizhzhya, near the front line. Before the war, the shelter housed about 300 animals, but in three months of hostilities, it received an additional 100 animals from the soldiers from the zone of fighting, from refugees who leave their homes and cannot take the animals with them. Every day new animals come to the shelter, for which it needs to build enclosures, feed them, and provide appropriate care. It is catastrophically difficult for staff and volunteers to cope with such overburdening, especially when donors are dwindling and needs are growing.

“Give me a paw, friend” also helps other shelters under occupation. The shelter needs your help to continue caring for animals and providing assistance to others.

Shelter needs:

  • partial evacuation of animals;
  • materials for the construction of new enclosures (boards, mesh, corrugated board, cement, rubble, and more);
  • dry food for dogs and cats, puppies, canned food for elderly animals, cereals;
  • mite repellents for cats and dogs of different weights “Simparica” and “Bravecto”, ear mite drops “Stronghold”;
  • financial assistance that can be provided to the bank accounts of the organization at the link.

Gostomel animal shelter

This is one of the oldest animal shelters in Ukraine, located in the Kyiv region, near Bucha. For 23 years, the organization has been working on the principle of a temporary home for animals. The ultimate goal is to find for each animal the superfamily that will take care of it. Currently, almost 700 animals, most of which are dogs, are under the care of the shelter. The largest veterinary hospital in Ukraine is equipped here. Stray animals are sterilized in the hospital, after the operation, they have rehabilitation and then return to the shelter or to their owners. The shelter exists due to the financial assistance of citizens and organizations, essential support is provided by volunteers.

The shelter survived the occupation in Gostomel at the beginning of the war. Its premises and property were damaged by the shelling. From the first days of the occupation, enemy tanks stood under the gates, the Russian military treated animals extremely cruelly, and some dogs were deliberately killed by targeted shots. There was no water in the shelter for almost a week, and no electricity for three months.

After the liberation, the shelter is being rebuilt, returning to the usual rhythm of life, and it really needs your help.

Gostomel shelter primarily needs:

  • food for animals (millet, meat, dry food, etc.);
  • firewood, which is used to cook food for dogs, as well as heat the premises in the cold season;
  • medicines for animals;
  • physical assistance of volunteers;
  • financial support that can be provided one-time in any convenient way for you, including PayPal, bank cards, WayForPay and more, or you can become a regular donor. Details at the link.
